Intro to conducting immigration evaluations: Canadian context
Immigration clinical evaluations can be very challenging and complex, especially when it comes to refugee claims. This type of evaluation requires a unique combination of clinical, ethical, and professional skills.
This introductory workshop will cover a wide range of topics related to immigration evaluations. It is an opportunity for participants to learn different styles of conducting evaluations such as asylum claims, violence against women, LGBTQI, hardships, human trafficking and torture survivors.
Other topics to be covered include assessment components, diagnosis, trauma history, court subpoenas, and more

Course Objectives:
- Develop a foundational knowledge of the various types of immigration evaluations that may be required, including asylum evaluations, hardship evaluations, and evaluations for victims of trafficking.
- Understand the basic legal and ethical principles that underpin the process of conducting immigration evaluations, including the importance of impartiality, cultural sensitivity, and confidentiality.
- Gain a basic understanding of the assessment tools and techniques used in immigration evaluations, such as clinical interviews, psychological testing, and observation of behavioral and emotional symptoms.
- Develop an appreciation for the unique challenges and considerations involved in conducting immigration evaluations, such as working with clients who may have experienced trauma, navigating cultural differences and language barriers, and managing expectations and potential conflicts with other stakeholders.
- Develop effective communication and report writing skills to ensure that the results of the evaluation are accurately conveyed to relevant parties, including immigration officials, attorneys, and other stakeholders involved in the process.
